Letters of Life

I’ll Bring You More Than A Song

There’s a Mandarin song I recently had to learn to sing properly for church worship. It wasn’t a particular favourite, but I worked on singing it right. Word by word, I took the song apart so I wouldn’t twist the Mandarin words out of shape by treating it like an English song. My confidence grew, as did my love for the song.

Listen to it here. Roughly, it translates into this:

Whom have I in heaven but You?

Apart from You, there’s none on earth that I long for

There is no one who can wipe away my tears

Apart from You, there is none who comforts me. . .

As the evening service drew to an end, a closing song was requested. This was unexpected, informal as the meeting was, for my role was only to open the meeting with several songs of worship. The pastor was open to any song, not necessarily those on the setlist, and for some reason I, too, was reluctant to repeat any of the earlier songs. But what would I choose?

I opened my song file and flipped blindly. There it was, the chord sheet of my favourite Mandarin worship song. Is it possible to be surprised and relieved at the same time?

Were the lyrics already stored in the software used for the overhead projection of the song? Yes.

We closed the service with it.

Mingling at the end of the service, I noticed the eyes of a guest looked wet and puffy. I asked and was told the song had moved her to tears.

What we have laboured over God uses if He chooses, and under Grace, His hand uses our offerings to touch a total stranger with something that comes from the heart. I guess I’ve known this all along, but this evening, the lesson of blessed preparation was drummed into me. Again.

Best of all, and I don’t know why, but all of this evening on the drive home across the Causeway, I felt like I’d been given a tremendous present, and it looked and felt a lot like Grace.
